That's What

By Mark Miller

Guitarist Oliver Gannon’s first CD from The Cellar in Vancouver was so successful musically that he has made another one just like it. If that seems redundant, let it be said that there’s always room for more of Gannon’s unpretentious, hard-swinging mainstream style of jazz. His pianist, Miles Black, is the fanciest Dan in this set of Monk, Mingus, standards and originals; Gannon keeps his own playing clean and to the point -- you can hear the influence of his fellow Canadian Sonny Greenwich, as well as the American Wes Montgomery, in this respect -- and he asks, and receives, much the same from bassist Miles Hill and drummer Blaine Wikjord. <<
